Interview with Ms. Lihwa Lin

 Q & A

1. Q:What brought you to be a voluntary crossing guard?

A:A lollipop lady introduced me by chance.

2. Q:Are there any schoolchildren or parents not listening to you?

A:Usually, we do have much time to reason with the drivers or pedestrians, so most of time we can only give some brief advice.

3.Q:Have you ever had any difficulties? How did you overcome it?

A:We wear the portable amplifier to let the drivers hear our directions clearly.

4.Q:How did you get along with other volunteers in the very beginning?

A:When I came to the volunteer team 29 years ago, the senior volunteers gave us advice and we would ask them as well. We therefore got familiar with this work gradually.

5.Q:What is the qualification for being an excellent volunteer?

A:He or she has to be principled, concentrated, responsible and careful.

6.Q:What impresses you most among all the rewards and certificates of appreciation you got?

A:It doesn't matter if I get rewards or not. My original intention of being a volunteer is to devote myself constantly.

7.Q:How do you get your sense of achievement as being a volunteer?

A:It's to see kids go home happily and safely.

8.Q:What is your best reward as being a volunteer?

A:It's that I can help people and feel enriched every single day.

A:Yes. Some lawsuits with the presidents or drivers have made me thinking about quitting.

10.Q:What do you think the crossing guard work need to be improved?

A:Most of the parents want to pick up their children as soon as they can. Although the numbers of student has been reduced a lot, the front of the school gate is still crowded and it is hard to students to walk out.  I hope the school can do something with that.

11.Q:What are your wishes or hopes?

A:I hope our school or the government can take care of our safety. There are many cases of car accidents happening during the time right before or after school.

12.Q:Do you need any special equipment on duty?

A:We need to wear the voluntary caps and the safety vest and safety sleeves. We can’t wear shorts or sandals. It is easy to fall down if you wear sandals in rainy days.

13.Q:How many members are there in the voluntary traffic guard teem presently?

A:There are 70 volunteers in total.

14.Q:Is the number of volunteers increasing or reducing?

A:It’s reducing.

15.Q:How many voluntary crossing guards you think will be enough?

A:I think there should be around 80. Hope there can be more people join us.
