2.Description of Our Community

Our school is located in Song-Shan district of Taipei city. Established in 1936, it's a typical metropolitan school.  Although we have a big playground, there is no gymnasium or indoor space for students to exercise. Under such conditions, our shuttleball team still wins lots of trophies.

After the shuttle team members graduate from the school, most of them continue playing shuttleball in the neighboring high schools.  Some players even become the national team members.  We can say that Xisong’s shuttleball team is the cradle of excellent athletes.

3.Description of Our Team

Our team members include Maggie, Peter, Kitty and Lulu. All of us are 12~13 years old.  We join the project because we would like to analyze the success of our shuttleball team and introduce this special sport to the world. The shuttleball in Taiwan is different from that outside Taiwan. Taiwan’s shuttleball is quite unique. The skills of Taiwanese shuttleball even mix some skills of traditional martial arts.

During the last 6 months, we searched the internet for the information about shuttleball, interviewed important persons, we designed different questionnaires, and we even learned how to kick a shuttleball.  We really appreciate our advisors, who instruct us how to finish the project and how to build web pages.
4.Summary of Our Project

Shuttleball is a sport which has been neglected all the time.  The number of shttleball teams in schools is limited.  It’s unlike basketball or soccer that there are always star players or been broadcasted.  However, its effects of exercise are not different from others’.

Shuttleball has been transformed from a folk trick, shuttlecock.  Its appearance and skills are much the same as that of the shuttlecock, though it is bigger in size.  Its rules and skills basically come from soccer and badminton, and even some from martial art.
Our project is taking the shuttleball team in Xisong Elementary School as the start to investigate the origin and possibilities of shuttleball.

6.Problems We Had to Overcome

(1) Insufficiency of time

We met in every morning before classes and lunch break except for midterms and finals.  However, our typing speed is slow so it always took a long time for us to finish an article.

(2) Language ability

We need language ability in either oral communication or writing.  When doing interviews, we were timid or stammering from time to time.  Besides, we had some typo or improper punctuation in our articles. We have to work harder in improving our language ability.

(3) Inaccessibility of references

The references of our school were stored in the basement before.  But because of the flood accompanied by the typhoon a few years ago, many paper references had been ruined.  We could only obtain information  from some retired teachers or alumni.

(4) Difficulty in interviews

We had tried to contact some important people in shuttleball field. However, they were not able to spare their time to meet us in person.  All we could do is interviewing them through the phone.

7.Our Project Sound Bite

Because our project theme is a sport, we have the chance to experience it ourselves.  We found is very interesting.  However, it’s a pity that there is no shuttleball lesson in our P.E. classes.  Shuttleball has been neglected for long and we didn’t know much about it.  But we understand it more gradually by making this project.
