2.Description of Our Community

Our school is located in Song-San district of Taipei city. Established in 1936, it's a typical metropolitan school. Although we have a big playground, there is no gymnasium or indoor space for students to exercise.  The area where a Pétanque game is played is called a "terrain". In 2010, we completed a Pétanque court and we have our first Pétanque team. Our Pétanque team win lots of trophies, and we let more people know about it!

3.Summary of Our Project

Pétanque is a sport which has been neglected all the time. The number of Pétanque teams in schools is limited. It’s unlike basketball or soccer that there are always star players or been broadcasted. However, its effects of exercise are not different from others’.

Pétanque is a form of boules where the goal is to throw hollow metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a jack, while standing inside a starting circle with both feet on the ground. During the last 3 months, we searched the internet for the information about Pétanque, interviewed important persons, we designed different questionnaires, and we even learned how to play Pétanque.  We really appreciate our advisors, who instruct us how to finish the project and how to build web pages.

4.Our Computers and Internet Access Internet environment of our school: Computer labs. Each computer terminal in our computer lab is connected to an optical cable and linked to the Taipei City Educational Network Center and then to the Taiwan Academic Network (TANet).  We mostly made use of the noon-time break, afterschool hours, and morning self-study sessions to discuss about our project, search and generate webpage contents, and organize our data.
5.Problems We Had To Overcome 1. Creation of the theme

When designing the questionnaire and the interview questions, at first everyone thought of ten questions and referred to past Cyberfair project questions, but there were repetitions, so everyone had to summarize them together and it took a long time.

2. Taking more time to organize the data

Sometimes there is too much data that has be looked through one by one and the wrong ones have to be deleted; these things require a lot of patient help from everyone. After interviewing the teachers and principal, the recordings have to be transcribed. Since we typed very slowly, sometimes the teachers talked a lot, and we have to listen to it over and over again, taking a long time.

3. Difficulties in recording

When typing reflections or recording issues, sometimes the writing for the records is too ugly making us unable to type the reflections. Now we have to look at the focus records, and think about it again before writing, and avoid the same problems.

4.Interview skill is not good

At first when we interviewed the principal and the teachers, we were scared of asking questions, but later we got used to it, and this made us excited again. When we interviewed the rhythm band teacher, we became more confident, and we were also not afraid when asking other rhythm band teachers over the years.

5. Falling behind

Sometimes maybe the current work is not complete, and the teacher has more assignments. Because of time crunch, before the work was done we had to conduct interviews, or even using our own time tom make up the progress. But if everyone is willing to work well, the work would definitely be complete. Sometimes, for morning self-study or lunch break meeting times, some people can’t come or come late, this would cause us to fall behind.

6. Time management

Some people also participated in the school’s public service teams like the traffic control team, so we need to quickly finish our own work in order to prevent problems to time management.

6.Afterthoughts

Because our project theme is a sport, we have the chance to experience it ourselves.  We found is very interesting.  However, it’s a pity that there is no Pétanque lesson in our P.E. classes.  Pétanque has been neglected for long and we didn’t know much about it.  But we understand it more gradually by making this project.
