*How does your activities and research meet the goals and mission of Cyberfair?

Xisong Elementary School Pétanque team has been established for 5 years, but it is not well known to most students. Our aim is to help the public learn about Pétanque, understand its development, and rediscover the joy of playing Pétanque.

Pétanque is a sport that few people know. We used interviews, questionnaires, data searches, personal experiences with instruments, posting the reflections and thoughts, interview results, and questionnaire surveys on the webpage, which conforms to the objective of Cyberfair, “using the internet as a tool for expression and communication.”

Our project introduces the Pétanque history, and the wonders of Pétanque. Hopefully, more people will join the Pétanque sport club.

*How did your activities and research for this International Schools CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Language Arts : The language ability is the most important subject during the research. It applies to the interview questions, research report, and analytical diagrams. Every time we wrote the report, our writing skills improved.

Mathematics: When we were conducting statistical analysis for the survey, we had to count the number of subjects, calculated the percentage, and trained our ability to read the charts. Thus, our math ability was improved.

Health and Physical Education: As we interviewed more people, we found out more about Pétanque. We played Pétanque ourselves, and enjoyed it very much.

Arts and Humanities: For webpage editing, we learned computer skills, and webpage layout and design.

Science and Technology: We searched information on the Internet and used various software for writing or webpage editing; thus, we improved our IT skills.

Social Studies: The main challenge of Pétanque is to control it. Beginners usually feel frustrated, but all Pétanque players persisted in practices. Their determination is our model.

Integrative Activities: During this project, we all kept positive interaction in cooperation and collaboration. The sense of accomplishment is our main motivation.

*In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We’ll bring the sport of Pétanque to the public with our project, since it is not well known to the sport society, even that someone ever heard of Pétanque before.  After discussing the research outline together and ascertaining the research objectives, we started collecting information on Pétanque, focusing on the topic for reporting and relevant people involved. Next, we conducted the interviews, recorded, and compiled data in person. We know that many people care about Pétanque, and have devoted to promote this sport.

In order to complete this Cyberfair project, we covered the history of Pétanque, established the interview plans and questions, for people including the principal, current players, and current teachers. We hope that the history of Pétanque can be comprehensively constructed from the mouths of each interview subject. We hope to let more people learn about Pétanque, its history and the development, and various Pétanque activities and competitions. We know that many people care about Pétanque, and have devoted to promote this sport.

*What has been the impact of your project on your community?

◎The influence on us:

We experienced a four-month production process involving a lot of processes, such as discussion, interviewing, recording, and sharing. We learned how to use many software and hardware, such as Excel, digital cameras, camcorders. We rarely use these in daily life, so this was a great opportunity. The influence on us was that through this research, we can better understand the importance of division of labor and cooperation. When students from different classes work hard together in the computer classroom, we can get to know more classmates, and it made us better friends!

◎Influence on the locale:

For this Cyberfair project, in the data collection process, we used interviews and questionnaires in hopes of receiving suggestions and opinions for the Pétanque team. We hope to give these opinions to everyone by creating a comprehensive Pétanque webpage so that everyone can see it, and everyone can get to know Pétanque

*Intellectual Properties

All the text in the website has been reported and summarized by the team members. The interviews are cited in the project webpage after consent from interviewees. If the website cites relevant literature and data, the citations or relevant website addresses are listed to maintain the rights of the original authors. In order to fully present the Cyberfair project webpage, we not only interviewed, took photos, videos, and sound recordings, but also referred to books, journals, and online data in the library. In order to maintain intellectual property rights, we carefully used photos, images, music, and text content. Most of the pictures on the webpage were taken by the teachers or students; citations have received interviewee consent.

*Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises

Although Pétanque is not popular, we found it to be a fun sport in this project. A lot of people support Pétanque firmly, participate in practices and competitions. That is because it is a whole body exercise, not just foot. It’s a very fun sport. During our interview, we saw the passion in Pétanque.

We arranged many interviews for the research. Before the interviews, we assigned tasks to each member, some took photos, some recorded the interview, some asked the interview question, some took notes, and some wrote reports. The tasks could not be completed by one person; teamwork made the interview smoother and easier. We truly realized that group work is the power.

During the interview process, we gained more knowledge about Pétanque. The players work hard to practices for both interests and competitions. Although the Pétanque team is not the center of attention, they never gave up their interest. “Working hard does not guarantee success, but not working hard certainly leads to failure.” Their efforts are seen by everyone. We admire their passion and devotion.
