Interview with the professional shuttleball coach – Mr. Cha-han Yang

 ....................................................................

Q1: How many school are there so far playing shuttleball?

A1: Around four or five teams in elementary school, three or four teams in junior high shool, two or three teams in senior high school, and eight to nine teams f or adult group.

Q2: How long have the most experienced shuttleball players been playing shuttleball here?

A2: Since shuttleball has twenty year history, the most experienced shuttleball players may have played for more than ten years.

Q3: Have you been in the international game? Do you go by yourself or with a team?

A3: I myself have been in the international games for three times. Once in Macaw, once in Hong Kong and once in China. I go there with a team. This year we get the third place.

Q4: Who pay for the fee of going abroad for games?

A4: We pay by ourselves. But Mr. Dung in Tangmei elementary school usually helps us with the accommodation. We feel so grateful.

Q5: According to photo on your website, we know there’s difference between the shuttleball in Taiwan and the one played outside Taiwan. Which is easier to learn?

A5: It depends on players’ individual background. For my opinion, younger students may feel easier by starting with Taiwan shuttleball. After they can play it well, they can learn playing takraw and be in the international games.

Q6: Is there any difficulty or frustration during playing?

A6: Yes, I was very frustrated especially when playing in the international games. I still remember I was shocked in my first game. The speed of the shuttleball of the competitor was so fast, that the ball was in front of me before I was aware of it. But after several games and with a lot of practice, I feel better now.

Q7: Are your parents supportive?

A7: Yes, they support me very mauch. They even pay the bill for my international games. But they just don’t want to see me get hurt during playing shuttleball. We do get hurt very easily especially when we smash during the game or play without enough warming up.

Q8: Do you think being able to play shuttlecock a great help to play shuttleball?

A8: Yes, it is, because they are all played by foot.

Q9: Do you wish Taiwanese shuttleball can be played in the international game?

A9: Yes, I do. Actually Ms. Min-shou Li, the inventor of Taiwanese shuttleball, had tried hard to make our shuttleball used in the international game in 2001. But she failed. The one they use now is more like a shuttlecock than a shuttle “ball”. Now there are around twenty countries using the latter one in the game. It seems hard to change anymore.

Q10: What do you do to popularize shuttleball?

A10: We are using the blog now. We update the pictures or articles about shuttleball and reply the messages regularly. But I always want to set up an official website to introduce shuttleball. Because with more and more senior coached retire, it is our, the young players’, responsibility to carry it on. I also start it by coaching students in elementary school to play shuttlball. If there are players, there will be games. And we can continue this sport.

Q11: Do the players in junior high and high school continue playing shuttleball after they go to university? How many of them will be players in the international game?

A11: Most of them stop playing after graduation because of the schoolwork pressure or they find something else interesting. We try to talk them into playing shuttleball again. The players in the international games are all the ones who love shuttleball and are willing to practice it continually. Since there is no try out for the international game, and the players are getting fewer and fewer, you can make yourself an international player if you wish.

Q12: What do you think of the future of the shuttleball?

A12: The future of the shuttleball lies on the young players’ determination now. If there are more players like me willing to coach students in the elementary school to play shuttleball, there will be more shuttleball players in the future, and we can have more games to carry this sport on.
